On July 16th, 2024, I ran a presentation for A11yNYC on Mobile Accessibility Tools and Camera Switches. It’s a fascinating topic that provides a more in-depth overview of accessibility technology that some may find esoteric, but still interesting to work with in its own right.

The presentation focused on specific interesting and potentially very useful accessibility options on the Android and iOS platforms, including Facial Gesture Recognition, Accessibility Scanner, and more.

The goal was to provide an overview and live demonstrations on how to set up, configure, and use advanced and often unnoticed assistive technologies to potentially make the lives of users with accessibility requirements easier and to showcase the unique potential of these tools.

The talk highlighted the use of hardware switches, specifically Camera Switches, on mobile devices. This technology went beyond just TalkBack and provided a powerful and potentially untapped capability to those who needed it and were using mobile devices.

The talk covered:

  • How hardware switches can be configured for optimal use.
  • Raising awareness for providing technologies for people with motor disabilities.
  • Using Accessibility Scanner and other tools to help identify where accessibility could be improved in different digital properties such as games and sites.

Here is a video of the presentation for anyone interested:
